How should you end a TikTok video?

Short answer: End a TikTok on a payoff, not a wind-down. Cut the 'thanks for watching' and the slow sign-off — deliver your last beat and stop. The strongest endings either loop cleanly back to the first line so the video replays, or leave one open question that pulls a comment.

The ending decides your completion rate

The last two seconds do more than they look like they do. A video that trails off — 'anyway, that's it, follow for more' — bleeds watch time right at the finish line, exactly where completion rate is measured. A video that ends on its sharpest beat and cuts hard keeps people to the final frame and often loops them back to the top. Don't decelerate into the ending; hit the point and get out. The close is the difference between a video that lingers and one that leaks its audience in the final stretch.

Three endings that work

  • The loop. Write the last line so it flows into the first, making the video feel seamless on replay — every extra loop is free watch time.
  • The open question. End by asking something specific and answerable — 'which one would you pick?' — so the natural next move is to comment, not swipe.
  • The hard payoff. Land the reveal, punchline, or result and cut on the frame. No outro, no wave, no dead air.

Skip the reflexive CTAs. 'Like and follow' tacked onto a video that hasn't earned it reads as filler and costs you the seconds that matter most. If you want follows, make the content good enough that checking your profile is the viewer's own idea. ReelTok scores the full video before you post, so you can see whether the ending holds attention or leaks it — and the caption fixer helps turn a flat closing line into a comment prompt.

Watch your retention graph's final segment. If there's a cliff in the last stretch, the ending is your leak — tighten it or cut straight to the payoff. A strong close is often just deleting the last three seconds.
