What does traffic source mean on TikTok?

Short answer: Traffic source shows where your views came from — For You feed, your profile, following feed, search, sounds, or hashtags. It's in each video's analytics. A high For You percentage means the algorithm is distributing you to non-followers, which drives growth. Heavy profile or following traffic means you're mostly reaching people who already know you.

Reading your traffic sources

Every video's analytics breaks down where its views came from, and each source tells a different story about how that video traveled. The main ones are For You (the recommendation feed), Personal Profile (people who tapped your profile then watched), Following (your followers' feed), Search, Sound, and Hashtag. The mix matters more than any single number because it shows whether the algorithm is doing the work of finding you new viewers, or whether you're mostly recirculating to people who already follow you.

What each mix is telling you

  • High For You percentage — the algorithm is actively distributing you to non-followers. This is the source that drives real growth.
  • High Personal Profile — people are checking out your profile and watching more; often means a video sent them there, or a series is pulling binge-watching.
  • High Following — you're reaching your existing audience but not breaking out. Fine for community, weak for growth.
  • Meaningful Search or Sound — you're getting discovered through intent (search) or a trend (sound), both worth leaning into if they recur.

Use this to diagnose, not to panic. A video that got decent views but almost all from Following didn't fail — it just stayed inside your bubble, usually because retention wasn't quite strong enough to earn a wider push. A video with a big For You share, even at lower total views, is the healthier signal because it means the system is testing you with strangers. Watch which of your videos earn For You distribution and study what they have in common.

Don't confuse Personal Profile traffic with organic reach. A spike there often just means you posted and your followers browsed your profile — it's not the algorithm putting you in front of new people the way For You does.
