What is more important: the hook or the content?

Short answer: The hook gets you watched; the content gets you followed. The hook decides whether anyone sees your video at all — without retention in the first seconds, the algorithm stops testing it. But content decides whether views turn into rewatches, comments, and followers. You need both, and the hook comes first in order of operations.

They do different jobs

This isn't really a versus. The hook and the content solve different problems, and confusing them is why creators plateau. The hook's only job is to win the first couple of seconds so the video survives its initial test batch. If the hook fails, it doesn't matter how good the rest is — nobody reaches it. That's why, in order of operations, the hook wins: it's the gate everything else sits behind.

But a great hook on empty content is its own trap. You'll get the view, then the swipe. Videos that hook hard and deliver nothing train your audience to distrust you, and they don't produce the things that actually compound — saves, rewatches, comments, follows. TikTok doesn't publish its ranking weights, but watch time and completion are widely understood to matter more than a single strong second, and those depend on the whole video, not just the opening.

How to think about it

  • Fix the hook first. If retention dies in the first two seconds, nothing downstream matters. This is the highest-leverage edit for most creators.
  • Then earn the finish: pacing, a payoff worth waiting for, and no dead air in the middle.
  • Match the promise. The content has to deliver what the hook promised, or the drop-off just moves later in the video.

Practical rule of thumb: if your videos get some views but no follows, your hook is working and your content isn't. If your videos barely get tested at all, start with the hook.

The strongest videos make the hook and the content the same thing — the interesting part is the opening, not a tease bolted onto the front of it.
