Why is my TikTok video blurry?

Short answer: TikTok videos look blurry mostly because of upload compression, a low-resolution source file, or the app's data-saver settings. TikTok compresses every upload, and a weak connection or the 'Upload HD' option being off makes it worse. Film and export in high resolution, turn on high-quality uploads, and post over Wi-Fi to keep detail.

Why TikTok blurs your video

  • Upload compression. TikTok re-encodes every video to save space, which softens detail, especially in fast motion and low light.
  • Data Saver. If Data Saver is on in settings, TikTok can handle video at lower quality. Turn it off.
  • Low-res source. Filming at a low resolution, heavy digital zoom, or poor lighting gives TikTok little detail to preserve.
  • Weak connection. Uploading on spotty data can force a lower-quality version through.
  • In-app camera. Recording inside TikTok is often softer than filming with your phone's native camera and importing.

How to keep it sharp

  1. Turn on the Upload HD or high-quality option when it appears on the post screen.
  2. Film with your phone's own camera app in good light at the highest resolution, then import into TikTok.
  3. Upload on Wi-Fi and give TikTok a minute to finish processing. The first version served can look rough before the HD pass finishes.
  4. Turn off Data Saver in settings.

Some softness is unavoidable because TikTok will always compress. But clean lighting and a high-res source do more for perceived sharpness than any setting, since the algorithm can only compress the quality you gave it.
