What is target audience?

Target audience: Your target audience is the specific group of people your content is made to reach and serve — defined by their interests, problems, and what they already watch. On short-form platforms, knowing your target audience shapes every hook, topic, and reference so the algorithm can match your videos to the viewers most likely to engage.

Why a defined audience beats a broad one

The algorithm learns who to show your video to from who engages with it early. If your content speaks to a clear group, those early viewers behave consistently — they watch, save, and follow — and the system finds more people like them. Vague content aimed at everyone gets a muddy early signal and struggles to find its people. Knowing your audience also sharpens your writing: you can reference what they already know and skip what they don't care about.

How to define and use it

  • Picture one real viewer — their age range, their problem, the videos already on their For You page.
  • Write hooks in their language, naming the exact situation they recognize instantly.
  • Check your analytics: who's actually watching may differ from who you pictured, and the data wins.
  • Make content that serves them specifically, not content that shows off for peers or fellow creators.
  • When two ideas compete, pick the one your core viewer would stop scrolling for.

Common misconception: narrowing your target audience shrinks your reach. It usually widens it — precise content earns stronger early engagement from the right people, and that's the signal that unlocks broader distribution. Trying to appeal to everyone is what actually limits reach.
