What is whitelisting?

Whitelisting: Whitelisting is when a creator grants a brand permission to run ads through the creator's own social handle, so the brand's paid promotions appear to come from the creator's account. On TikTok this is enabled through Spark Ads authorization; the creator stays the visible face while the brand controls targeting and budget.

Why brands pay extra for whitelisting

Whitelisting is valuable because ads that run from a real creator's handle tend to feel less like ads. The audience sees a familiar face and a genuine account, not a corporate page, so the promotion carries the trust the creator has already built. Brands pay a premium for this — often a separate line item from the content fee — because it lets them scale your voice with paid budget while you stay the credible source. If you license usage rights without pricing whitelisting separately, you may be handing over your handle's ad access for free.

How to protect yourself

  • Set a time window. Whitelisting should have an end date, not run indefinitely — 30, 60, or 90 days are common terms to negotiate.
  • Price it as its own line. Content creation and handle access are two different values; charge for each.
  • Define approval rights. Decide whether you review the ad copy and targeting before it goes live under your name.
  • Keep the authorization revocable, and confirm you can pull access when the term ends.

Common misconception: whitelisting and a normal sponsored post are the same deal. A sponsored post is one video you make; whitelisting is ongoing ad access to your account. The second can run far longer and reach far more people, so it should never be bundled in for free.
