How do you write a caption that gets comments?
Short answer: You write a comment-getting caption by asking one specific, easy question or leaving a deliberate gap people rush to fill. Replying should take two seconds and require an opinion everyone already has — 'which one, A or B?' beats 'let me know your thoughts.' Vague prompts get scrolled; a low-effort, high-opinion question gets answered.
Why most captions get no comments
The default caption — a summary of the video plus a few hashtags — gives nobody a reason to type. Comments take effort, and viewers only spend it when the payoff is easy and the opinion is ready. 'Let me know what you think' fails because it's open-ended; the viewer has to invent both the topic and the take. The fix is to do that work for them: hand them a narrow question with an obvious, low-effort answer they already hold, tied to something the video made them feel.
Caption patterns that pull comments
- The either/or. 'Team A or team B?' People answer binary questions almost reflexively — no thinking required.
- The deliberate gap. State something slightly incomplete on purpose and the comments will finish it. Use lightly — don't bait rage.
- The specific ask. 'What's your go-to when this happens?' beats 'any tips?' because it names the exact thing to answer.
- The relatable confession. Admit something and ask 'just me?' — the pile-on of 'not just you' writes itself.
Keep it to one prompt. A caption asking three questions gets zero answers because it's work to parse — pick the single easiest thing to reply to and cut the rest. ReelTok's caption fixer rewrites a flat caption into a version built to prompt replies, and reviews it against the video before you post so the ask actually fits what viewers just watched.
Reply to the first comments fast. Early responses signal an active thread and pull more people in — TikTok surfaces conversations, so a caption that starts one is only worth it if you keep it going in the first hour.
