What is cpm?

CPM: CPM, or cost per mille, is the price an advertiser pays for one thousand ad impressions, and it's the standard unit for buying and comparing ad campaigns. For creators, CPM is the benchmark brands use to value paid placements, so understanding it helps you sanity-check what a sponsored post or ad-driven deal is actually worth.

Why CPM matters when you're getting paid

CPM is the language brands and ad platforms think in. 'Mille' is Latin for thousand, so CPM is the cost to reach a thousand people once. When a brand values a sponsorship, they often back into a fair fee from the views they expect and a target CPM. Knowing that math lets you check an offer: if a brand pays a flat fee for a video that reliably pulls a certain number of views, you can translate it into an effective CPM and see whether you're priced like a bargain or a premium.

How to use it

  • Estimate your effective CPM: divide your fee by expected views, then multiply by a thousand — a quick gut-check on any offer.
  • CPM varies enormously by niche, audience location, and season, so there's no single 'right' number — finance and tech audiences typically command more than broad entertainment.
  • Higher engagement and a tightly defined audience justify a higher CPM; a big but passive following justifies less.
  • Use CPM to compare offers on the same footing, not to set your price in a vacuum.

Common misconception: CPM is a fixed market rate you can look up. Actual CPMs swing widely by niche, region, format, and time of year, and platform ad rates change constantly — treat any figure as a moving benchmark and check current ranges rather than quoting a number as fact.
