What is reach?

Reach: Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your video at least once, counting each viewer one time no matter how often they watched. It measures the true size of your audience for a post, distinct from impressions and views, which can count the same person repeatedly.

Why reach is the metric behind every other metric

Reach is the denominator of your performance math. Engagement rate, share rate, and save rate only mean something relative to how many unique people actually saw the video — and reach is the honest count, because it filters out the same viewer being served your content twice. Growing reach is also the whole game of short-form: platforms distribute videos in successive waves, and each wave of new unique viewers is the platform betting your content deserves a bigger audience.

How to grow it

  • Win the early test. Strong retention and engagement from the first viewers is what unlocks the next, larger wave of distribution.
  • Make content non-followers can understand cold — reach growth comes from strangers on the For You page, not your existing audience.
  • Add searchable elements: clear spoken keywords, on-screen text, and descriptive captions help search and suggested feeds keep serving the video after the initial push.
  • Analyze before you post. Tools like ReelTok estimate predicted reach from a video's hook, pacing, and structure — treat any prediction as an estimate that guides edits, never a guarantee.

Common misconception: reach and views are the same number. Views count every play, including one person watching three times; reach counts that person once. A video with views far above reach isn't necessarily finding new people — it may be looping hard with a smaller audience.
