What is share rate?

Share rate: Share rate is the percentage of viewers who send your video to someone else or repost it to their own audience. Many creators treat it as the strongest engagement signal on short-form platforms because a share puts your video in front of people the algorithm hadn't reached yet.

Why shares are the highest-value signal

A share does two jobs at once. It tells the algorithm your video was worth a viewer's social capital — they staked their taste on it — and it manually delivers your video to people outside the platform's current distribution through DMs, group chats, and stories. That second audience costs the platform nothing to acquire, which is widely believed to be why heavily shared videos so often see follow-on distribution pushes. Platforms don't publish weightings, but among creators, shares sit at the top of the engagement hierarchy.

How to make shareable videos

  • Make the viewer look good for sending it: extremely relatable, genuinely useful, or the funniest thing in the group chat that day.
  • Target a specific relationship — "send this to the friend who's always late" gives the share a recipient.
  • Compress the idea so it survives a cold open. The recipient has zero context, so the video must land on its own within seconds.
  • Lean on utility: recipes, hacks, and templates get forwarded because sending them is doing someone a favor.

Common misconception: shares only count when someone reposts publicly. Private sends through DMs and group chats count too, and for most creators they're the bulk of share volume — check the share number in TikTok Studio rather than judging by visible reposts.
