Why the Creativity Program changed the math

The Creativity Program pushed TikTok payouts toward longer, original content. Unlike the old Creator Fund, it rewards videos over roughly a minute, which nudged many short-form creators to rethink length. That matters because it changes the trade-off: a 90-second video that holds attention can qualify and earn, but only if retention survives the added length. Padding a clip just to clear the one-minute mark usually backfires — you get the length requirement with none of the watch-time payoff.

How to make it work

  • Only extend a video when you have a full minute of substance. Retention, not length, drives both distribution and payout.
  • Keep it original. The program is built around original content, so reposts and heavily borrowed footage typically don't qualify.
  • Use an open loop early so viewers cross the middle of a longer video instead of swiping at the minute mark.
  • Confirm eligibility and current rules on TikTok's official pages — the program name, thresholds, and availability differ by region and change over time.

Think of it as one income stream layered on top of brand deals and your own offers, not a replacement for them.

Common misconception: switching to one-minute videos automatically increases your earnings. Longer only pays if viewers stay. A short video with excellent retention often builds a healthier audience than a padded long one people abandon before the payoff.
