What is shadowban?

Shadowban: A shadowban is an unannounced drop in a creator's distribution, where a platform quietly limits how often their videos appear in recommendations without notifying the account. It's not an official TikTok term — creators use it to describe sudden reach drops that may stem from guideline flags, repeated violations, or ordinary algorithm variance.

What's actually happening when reach drops

'Shadowban' is creator slang, not an official TikTok term, and TikTok doesn't acknowledge silently suppressing accounts as a named penalty. What platforms do confirm: individual videos can be flagged ineligible for the For You feed over guideline issues, unoriginal content, or borderline topics, sometimes without an obvious notification, and accounts with repeated violations can see reduced distribution. The complication is that ordinary algorithm variance produces brutal view swings too — a run of three underperforming videos usually means weak hooks, not a ban.

How to diagnose and recover

  • Open account status in TikTok Studio. TikTok surfaces violations and For You feed ineligibility flags there — that's your closest thing to a real answer.
  • Check traffic sources on recent videos. A genuine restriction usually shows near-zero For You page traffic, not just lower totals.
  • Remove or appeal flagged videos, then keep posting clean, guideline-safe content. Many creators report reach returning once flags expire.
  • Rule out the boring explanation first: compare your recent hooks and retention against your best performers.

Common misconception: third-party shadowban checkers can detect a shadowban. None of them can — they have no access to TikTok's internal moderation state, and most just check whether your hashtags return search results. Trust TikTok Studio's account status over any external test.
