What is traffic source?

Traffic source: Traffic source is the breakdown of where a video's views came from — the For You feed, profile, search, sounds, or the following feed. On short-form platforms it tells you which distribution channel is actually working, so you can build on what's pulling views instead of guessing.

Why the source of your views matters

Two videos with the same view count can come from completely different places, and the difference changes your whole strategy. Views from the For You feed mean the algorithm is pushing you to strangers — pure discovery. Views from search or a sound page mean people are finding you through intent, which tends to keep earning views long after posting. Views from your profile mean existing fans are digging through your work. Reading the split tells you whether a video went viral, is quietly compounding through search, or is mostly circulating among people who already follow you.

How to use the split

  • If search drives real traffic, lean into TikTok SEO — spoken keywords, on-screen text, and captions that match what people type.
  • If a sound is sending views, post more using that sound while it's still climbing.
  • If For You dominates, study which hook and format the algorithm rewarded and make more like it.
  • If nearly all views come from your profile, the video isn't being recommended — revisit the hook and first few seconds.

Check the traffic source on both your hits and your flops. The pattern behind what gets recommended is more useful than any single video's view count.

Common misconception: all views are interchangeable. A view from search can compound for months, while a For You spike often fades in days — the source shapes both the shelf life and the audience you're building.
