Does a private account affect your TikTok reach?

Short answer: Yes, a private account kills your reach entirely. When your account is private, only approved followers can see your videos, so nothing reaches the For You page and non-followers can't find you at all. If you're trying to grow, your account must be public. Check this first if views suddenly dropped to near zero.

Private means invisible to everyone but your followers

A private account is a hard wall, not a dial. With privacy on, only people you've approved as followers can watch your videos. That means zero For You page distribution, zero search visibility to non-followers, and no way for new people to discover you. If growth is the goal, private is the one setting that guarantees it can't happen.

This trips up more creators than you'd expect. A private toggle can get flipped by accident, or an account created as private never got switched over. If your views cratered to near zero across every video at once, not a slow decline but a cliff, check your privacy setting before you blame the algorithm or assume you're shadowbanned.

Public account, private videos

There's a subtler version too. Your account is public, but individual videos are set to 'Followers' or 'Only me.' Those specific posts won't reach the For You page even though your profile is public. When you post, confirm the audience for each video is set to 'Everyone.'

What to do

  • Go to Settings, then Privacy, and turn off 'Private account.'
  • Open a few recent posts and confirm each one is set to 'Everyone,' not 'Followers' or 'Only me.'
  • If you want a private personal life, keep it on a separate account and leave your creator account fully public.
  • After switching to public, give it a few posts. You weren't penalized, you were just invisible.
